What you want is closer than you think [Wise Wednesdays]

Have you been invited to participate in a virtual summit or conference since the pandemic started?

I’d noticed a few great ones happening over the past few weeks. Great speaker line-ups, topical themes helping you live and work in uncertain times.

I wondered about contributing to one and how to become part of one.

Then the limiting thoughts arose:

  • It’s probably a lot of work
  • The speakers must be much more experienced than me
  • They must be better networked or be friends with the organisers
  • Perhaps it’s something you do when you’re more advanced in business
  • Perhaps it’s something you do when you’re at the start of business…
  • Etc.

I parked the idea.

Then yesterday, a LinkedIn post pops up: Leaders in Wellbeing Summit 2020. It was one of these lovely mosaic pictures with smiling faces of the speakers. And, to my momentary surprise, I spotted myself in the line-up.

What?! Oh, yeah…I’m speaking at the LWB summit! (And, I'm delighted to be part of it again.)

Doh.

I’d been doing all this work preparing and even filming for the event on the one hand, while a part of my mind was completely blind to it. Split brain? Schizophrenia?...

Sort of.

That’s how limiting beliefs work.

They create a bias that gives you tunnel vision and traps you in a story that has nothing to do with reality.

Limiting beliefs focus your attention and energy on lack and insecurity and blind you to what’s already available to you. But a little nudge and you can be back in sync with reality:

  • Sometimes you’ll be pulled out of the tunnel and reminded that you already have what you want (like me)
  • Sometimes you’ll realise you don’t have the problem you think you have.
  • And, sometimes, you’ll start seeing the opportunities that will get you to where you want.
It happens in coaching conversations all the time. Someone will describe the life they want and I’ll point out that they already have all of that. “Oh, yeah”, they say. I do have a good job and a nice family. Then we get to explore what they really want which is much more fun.

If you need a little help with remembering good things you already have so you don’t accidentally end up chasing them unnecessarily, see 3 practices in the video below.

If you slow down and look closely, what do you want right now that you already have?

Have a great week,

Amina
