When nothing works [Wise Wednesdays]

There are dead ends in life. And then there are apparent dead ends. These are in fact twists in the path, roadblocks that need diligent and focused but malleable persistence.   I go through one every 2 years or so in my business. Nothing seems to be working and I start to slow down and zoom out.     It’s at these points that some things need to be let go of and new ones welcomed.   It’s scary and vulnerable. But absolutely necessary to success.     It’s how I made it to 6 years and not 2.     Photo: Enjoying a new season   NOT ENDINGS BUT CYCLES OF CHANGE   The key to not getting stuck in an apparent dead end is recognising where you are in natural Cycles of Change which I talk about in The Success Trap: Why Good People Stay in Jobs They Don’t Like and How to Break Free     (You can access the chapter on change cycles here: https://www.doctoramina.com/creative-cycles)   You see, there are often two forces keeping you stu...

Burnout is a repeated compromise [Wise Wednesdays]

I was never meant to write a book on career change let alone be ‘marketing’ it. I was meant to be a doctor working on global health policy. You're not required to compromise your deeper values to live a happy and fulfilled life. But you do need to do the work on yourself. Y...

I had a coaching conversation with a top performing fraud investigator who’s worked for some of the biggest global corporations in the world.     He said he was getting bored with his current job.     On probing deeper, it turns out he has a vision for organisations that put people before profit and prioritise their employee wellbeing. He has a gift for knowing what people need and communicates in a way that generates collaboration and good will. He had some ideas for how to re-orient his career track.   But he was worried about his salary. He had family to support back home and enjoyed a cosy lifestyle.   So he procrastinated and felt that he just didn’t know what to do…     “I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO”: THE DREAM KILLER   This is the one of the thorniest issues in career change. It’s not an acceptable state for most especially high performers who have a reputation for always knowing what to do.     Yet, creating a new stage of...
